3rd Grenadier Guards – War Diary

1 – 3 Mar 1917 An inter Company relief took place on the night of the 1st/2nd without incident. Work was continued on improvement of trenches. Several patrols were sent out to ascertain how strongly enemies posts were held & the nature of his wire.
4 Mar 1917 The Battn remained in the trenches for a fifth day, as there were already three reliefs taking place on the night of 3/4th. The XV Corps also carring out an attack E of BOUCHAVESNES. The Battn was to cooperate by a discharge of smoke-bombs, but the wind was unfavourable. The garrison of the advanced posts were evacuated during the barrage preceding the attack.
5 Mar 1917 The Battn was relieved by the 1st Battn Scots Guards on night of 4/5th, and marched to MAUREPAS. The Baths were used by the Battn for the washing of feet.
6 – 7 Mar 1917 Training of Lewis Gunners and Snipers was continued and also drill done.
8 Mar 1917 The Battn relieved the 1st Battn Scots Guards in the trenches on the night of 7/8th. Relief took place without incident. Work was continued in front line of linking up islands and general improvement of trenches.
9 – 10 Mar 1917 An inter Company relief took place on the 9th/10th
